Elizabeth sat under a tree on the lawn behind the high school, her spiral notebook open on her lap. The breeze that ruffled her hair was as hot and dry as an oven; it had to be ninety-five degrees even in the shade.

Tipping her head back against the tree trunk, Elizabeth closed her eyes and fantasized about diving into the cool water of the swimming pool in her backyard. If I left now, I could be in my bathing suit in ten minutes.

Elizabeth glanced at her watch and sighed. It was nearly four. She'd been blowing Todd off all day. I really should hang around so at least we can drive home together. Elizabeth closed her eyes again, fanning herself with the notebook. Her eyelids drooped, then closed. . . .

An hour and a half later, Elizabeth's eyes popped open and she sat up like a jack-in-the-box. Blinking sleepily, she brushed the blades of grass from her bare arms.

Gathering up her things, Elizabeth scrambled to her feet and set off for the gym. The gym was empty, so she ran to the parking lot . . . just in time to see Todd's black BMW exit the lot and speed off.

Elizabeth waved her arms, even though there was no chance of flagging Todd down. Rats. Well, maybe Jessica's still here, she thought. A quick scan of the parking lot, however, revealed that the Jeep, too, was gone.

At that moment she noticed someone signaling to her from the other side of the parking lot. Elizabeth narrowed her eyes against the blinding afternoon sun. Elizabeth waved back. "Hi, Bruce!"

"Need a ride?" he called.

Thinking about Todd's expression as she drove off with Bruce that morning, Elizabeth hesitated, but only for a second. "Actually, I do," she called back. "If it's not too much trouble."

"Kind of hot for tennis-team practice," Elizabeth remarked as Bruce pointed the Porsche in the direction of Calico Drive.

"It was brutal," Bruce agreed.

"I can't wait to get into the pool." Elizabeth lifted the hair off the back of her neck. "I may not get out again until this heat wave is over!"

Bruce managed to crack a smile.

"Will you go for a swim when you get home?" she asked conversationally.

Bruce shrugged. "I don't know if I am going home," he mumbled, flicking on his turn signal. "I might take a drive. I just don't think I can stand to be there, with my mom gone and all."

Elizabeth turned to Bruce impulsively. "Look, why don't you come over for a while?" she suggested. "We could take a swim, have something to eat."

Bruce glanced at her, his eyebrows cocked. "Wilkins won't mind?"

"It's my house," Elizabeth reasoned.
